Marc A. Fischer
On August 9, 2024, Supervisory Correctional Systems Specialist (SCSS) Marc A. Fischer of USP Atwater (CA) became ill while on duty. After being evaluated by medical staff, he was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away shortly thereafter. The incident was later linked to a narcotics laced letter that had been mailed to the institution. Two staff members who opened the letter became ill; one recovered, while SCSS Fischer tragically did not.
SCSS Fischer joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) as a Correctional Officer in 2001 following his service in the United States Coast Guard. Over the course of his career, he was well-known as a respected leader and mentor at USP Atwater. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
A multi agency investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the BOP, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration and multiple U.S. Attorney's Offices, resulted in federal charges related to the introduction and distribution of synthetic narcotics within the institution. Federal authorities charged three individuals with offenses connected to the scheme. One defendant pled guilty and received a term of incarceration and supervision. Proceedings for the remaining defendants are ongoing.
Marc A. Fischer's name is listed in the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorialin recognition of his service and sacrifice. He is buried at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, California. Marc, you will never be forgotten.
