(BOP) - Attorney General William P. Barr has appointed Michael Carvajal, Assistant Director for the Correctional Programs Division, as the successor to outgoing Director Kathleen Hawk Sawyer. Director Hawk Sawyer commented, "When Deputy Director Kane and I returned to the Bureau last August, we committed to Attorney General Barr to strive toward two very important goals: (1) raise the Attorney General's confidence and faith in the Bureau; and (2) identify and recommend a career BOP leader for the Attorney General to appoint as Bureau Director for the long term. We met with AG Barr on February 10, 2020 and I am happy to report both goals have been accomplished. I am very grateful that the Attorney General has appointed former Regional Director and Assistant Director Michael Carvajal as the 11th Director of the Bureau of Prisons. I am confident Director Carvajal will successfully lead the Bureau forward with the support of our outstanding staff nationwide."
