In January 2024, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) Population Management and Capacity Planning Committee recommended changing the name of seven facilities to match their approved mission and security level. This recommendation was made in accordance with Program Statement 1001.14, Naming Bureau Property, which states that "institutions generally are named based on the type of facility and location." The FBOP Executive Team approved the recommendation in February 2024 and the Office of Congressional and Public Affairs completed the appropriate notifications last month.
The facilities being renamed include six current USPs: Atlanta, Leavenworth, Lewisburg, Lompoc, Marion, and Yazoo City. The seventh facility is FCI Morgantown. The missions and security levels for these facilities had been previously changed but for a variety of reasons the names of the facilities were not. Changing the names to properly reflect the actual facility mission and security levels will be more transparent and intuitive for the public and for adults in custody. The six USPs will be renamed as FCIs as each of them are either low or medium security facilities now. As a minimum security institution, FCI Morgantown will become FPC Morgantown.
The name change for these locations should NOT cause a physical change to the facade of the structure without a formal historical survey approved by the State in which it is located.
