Acting NIC Director addresses MCSA

Dr. McLearen shares her vision for NIC

Acting NIC Director addresses MCSA

(BOP) - On January 31, 2023, National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Director (A), Dr. Alix McLearen, and Jails Division Chief, Stephen Amos, addressed the Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA) during their winter conference in Washington, DC. MCSA is the law enforcement association comprised of the 113 largest counties in the country - those with 500,000 or more residents. NIC has collaborated with MCSA, and other federal agencies including the Bureau of Justice Assistance, to develop a coordinated and collaborative approach to assist state and local law enforcement agencies (primarily sheriffs) on an ongoing basis to resolve technical and constitutional compliance issues in the nation's jails. The partnership has since expanded to include the U.S. Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Through this extended partnership, the Department of Justice Jail and Justice Support Center is being launched and will serve as a coordinated on-ramp to federal support including technical assistance, grants, training, and information in response to the needs of the nation's sheriffs and jail administrators. Dr. McLearen spoke to the group to share her vision for NIC and thank them for their ongoing partnership.
