(BOP) - The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) announce an upcoming leadership change: Acting Director Shaina Vanek will begin a six-to-twelve month detail at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) next month.
Shaina Vanek has served as the Acting Director of NIC for over five years, leading the agency across two Administrations in supporting the field of corrections at the federal, tribal, state, and local levels. From community-based services of parole and probation, to our nation's jails and prisons, she has steadfastly supported NIC's mission to "advance public safety by shaping and enhancing correctional policies and practices through leadership, learning, and innovation." Her steadfast leadership has seen NIC through a significant period marked by unprecedented challenges and change, bringing stability and increased infrastructure to the agency.
Ms. Vanek states, "I'm grateful for my time at NIC and having had the privilege to lead it over the past five plus years. The can-do attitude of the NIC team; the unyielding support from the field; the importance of the work, and the difference that NIC makes in the lives of the staff and justice-involved individuals-this is why public service is so fulfilling." BOP Director Colette Peters says of Ms. Vanek's service, "We are fortunate to have been able to witness and work amongst an industry expert such as Ms. Vanek. The level of hard work and dedication Shaina devoted to every situation was incredible!"
At the CFPB, Ms. Vanek will be providing subject matter expertise, advice, and leadership on CFPB policies and programs that affect justice-involved individuals-staying close to her roots and colleagues throughout the Department of Justice (Department).
BOP Acting Deputy Director William Lothrop, Jr., will assume the role of Acting NIC Director in the interim, pending the appointment of a new Director. Mr. Lothrop has benefitted from many NIC programs and trainings in his career and has always supported the important role that NIC has-both in the field of corrections broadly and within the Bureau specifically. Mr. Lothrop's commitment to training and education are closely aligned with both the NIC and the Department's goals of supporting our nation's criminal justice professionals, providing them with the tools and expertise necessary to effectively accomplish their important public safety duties.
