FCI Estill Struck by Tornado

(BOP) - On Monday, April 13, 2020, FCI Estill took a direct hit by a tornado. There were no injuries to staff or inmates. The institution remains on limited operational status and is secured. Several facility buildings have suffered damage and the institution is running on generator power. The Institution Command Center has been activated as well as the Bureau of Prisons' Regional Command Center, and emergency procedures have been put in place. Visiting remains suspended as part of the BOP's COVID-19 response. There are no positive cases of COVID-19 among staff or inmates at FCI Estill.

Phone service at the facility and surrounding areas is inoperable at this time. Due to the ongoing community response, local authorities have asked that inmate friends and families not utilize the 911 emergency telephone service for inquiries about the facility. Inmate families are asked to check the BOP website routinely for any updates: www.bop.gov

FCI Estill is a medium security institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp, which together house 1,187 inmates.
