Verdict in Lt. Osvaldo Albarati Murder Trial

Inmate Oscar Martinez-Hernández found guilty

Bureau Assists in FBI Most Wanted Fugitive Apprehension

(BOP) - On September 20, 2018, a jury found Oscar Martinez-Hernández guilty in the February 26, 2013, murder of MDC Guaynabo Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati. Two other co-defendants, Carlos Rosado-Rosado and Jancarlos Velázquez-Vázquez, pleaded guilty on August 13, 2018. The remaining six defendants are awaiting trial.

During the trial, evidence showed that Oscar Martinez-Hernández had agreed to contribute money for Lt. Albarati's murder and assisted with signaling to other inmates when he left work. The jury found Martinez-Hernández guilty of all six counts of the indictment, including the murder of a federal officer, murder for hire, conspiracy, and related firearms offenses.

In a Press Release, United States Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez-Vélez stated, "With this conviction we take another step towards our goal of holding those who carried out this reprehensible and senseless murder accountable for their actions. The Department of Justice will continue to honor Lieutenant Albarati's legacy as a public servant, his dedication to safeguard the community, and his integrity."

The Bureau of Prisons fully supports and respects the efforts of law enforcement officials and all those involved in the case dedicated to ensuring that those responsible for Lieutenant Albarati's murder are brought to justice. Lieutenant Albarati's service to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, his fellow staff, and the public will always be remembered and honored.
