Bureau signals intent to build a new United States Penitentiary

Never Forgotten

(BOP) - On Friday, March 30, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons signed the Record of Decision pertaining to construction of the United States Penitentiary (USP), in Letcher County, Kentucky. The signing of this document signals the Bureau's intent to move forward with construction of a new high security prison in Roxana, Kentucky, that will employ 300-400 staff, many of whom will be hired from the local area. The new facility will be the sixth federal prison in Kentucky, and the third high security federal facility. The next step in the process is for the Bureau to purchase the land where the prison will be sited. The Bureau appreciates the support from the United States Congress in providing funding of $510 million for this project.
