(BOP) - Ten inmates from FCI Gilmer graduated this week with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree due to the efforts of the Supervisor of Education, teachers and information technology staff at the institution and Glenville State College. Seven of the inmates graduated with honors.
Inmate students complete the computer-related curriculum requirements for the AAS program including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet/Business Planning by using "i-Connect," the Bureau's inmate education network, and a series of simulated applications included on the system. A Glenville State College professor created the college-level curriculum for the inmates to use based on the simulated applications.
The program is so popular that there are currently 59 inmates enrolled in classes, 82 enrolled for next semester, and another 114 inmates are on a waiting list. Inmates who remain incident free for at least a year have the opportunity to pursue this AAS program and the chance to continue their education and earn a Bachelor's Degree in Business from the college.
