Bureau Supports Military Veterans

Veterans play an active role in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Bureau Supports Military Veterans

(BOP) - More than 35% of the Bureau of Prisons workforce serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The Bureau benefits from the vast experience of veterans as corrections professionals, including those serving as correctional officers, counselors, managers, administrative staff, and in a variety of other positions throughout the federal prison system. Many veterans face challenges transitioning back to civilian life. The Bureau Battle Buddy (B3) Program was created to help returning Bureau veterans with the transition and assimilation back into work following active duty. Volunteer "Buddies," who are typically also veterans, receive training on effective communication, how to identify issues, and how to access resources for veterans. Institutions nationwide host "Veterans Retreats" to educate staff on the B3 Program and to provide information on other resources available for veterans and their families.

The Bureau was recently recognized for its support of Veterans. FDC SeaTac was recognized at the Law Enforcement and Corrections Recognition Ceremony hosted by the 42nd Military Police Brigade and the Directorate of Emergency Services for outstanding support and assistance to veterans and active servicemen and women and their families. Similarly, staff at FMC Devens received the "Patriot Award" from the Department of Defense National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The "Patriot Award" is given to managers and supervisors who actively support their employees' performance through a variety of measures, including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence.
