Director's Statement On Presidential Visit

Statement from Director Charles E. Samuels, Jr. about historic visit by President Obama to FCI El Reno.

Director's Statement On Presidential Visit

(BOP) - Today's visit was a wonderful opportunity for the Bureau of Prisons to show the President of the United States and his senior staff one of our Federal Correctional Institutions. I am honored that the President selected a federal prison for his visit, and I am immensely proud of the work we do at the Federal Correctional Institution in El Reno and the other 121 federal prisons around the country. The Bureau of Prisons has a long tradition of providing programs to inmates including education, substance abuse, job skills training and more, all intended to prepare inmates for a successful return to the community. With the support of former Attorney General Holder, in recent years we have re-invigorated our efforts and we have expanded our focus to include the children of incarcerated parents. The inmates at El Reno who had the opportunity to speak with the President described the outstanding work performed by the 39,000 staff who make up the Bureau of Prisons. We appreciate the support of Attorney General Lynch and Deputy Attorney General Yates to advance the mission of the Bureau of Prisons to protect society and reduce crime. We will continue to identify best practices to improve operations and we look forward to supporting the criminal justice reform efforts described by President Obama this week.
