Federal Time Credit Application Guide

Learn how federal time credits are earned, calculated, and applied under the First Step Act.

We are pleased to announce the rollout of a new First Step Act (FSA) Federal Time Credit Application Informational Guide, developed to support a clearer understanding of how federal time credits are earned, calculated, and applied under the First Step Act.

This guide is designed as an informational tool and provides a visual and easy to follow explanation of:

  • How quickly eligible inmates can transition from incarceration to community-based programs or supervised released
  • Inmate placement and the overall effectiveness of the First Step Act's goal to incentivize rehabilitation and reduce recidivism
  • Fairness and transparency in sentence administration
  • Institutional efficiency, promoting public safety, and supporting fiscal responsibly through reduced incarceration costs

This is part of our ongoing commitment to provide consistent, transparent, and up-to-date guidance across all facilities and ensure that staff are equipped to answer questions and apply the policy fairly and accurately.
