(FBOP) Recent site visits across Colorado provided Bureau leadership with an opportunity to engage directly with staff, observe program implementation, and reaffirm core commitments to operational excellence and rehabilitative innovation.
Director William K. Marshall III, joined by Reentry Services Division Assistant Director Dana DiGiacomo, North Central Regional Director Andre Matevousian, and Acting Regional Counsel Christina Scofield, visited ADX Florence (CO) last month to engage with staff and observe firsthand the facility’s specialized programming and operational practices.
Inside the walls of one of the nation’s most secure facilities, the team engaged directly with staff, listening to their insights and observing the implementation of specialized inmate programming. From mental health services to reentry preparation, the ADX staff showcased their dedication to creating pathways for growth—even in the most challenging environments. Director Marshall and AD DiGiacomo witnessed firsthand how staff are adapting programming to meet the unique needs of inmates, reinforcing the Bureau’s mission to foster a constructive and secure correctional setting.
Meanwhile, at the MSTC in Aurora, Deputy Director Joshua J. Smith took the lead on a parallel initiative. Deputy Director Smith opened with a two-hour staff recall, addressing questions on the future of training, its priorities, evolution, and overall impact.
The MSTC visit included focused meetings, a breakout session with the Audio-Visual team, and a tour of the kitchen training area, where innovation in hands-on learning was on full display. Deputy Director Smith’s presence and engagement reflected a deep respect for the role of training in shaping a resilient, capable workforce.
Both visits culminated in Denver, where Director Marshall and Deputy Director Smith participated in the Summer ACA/CLA Conference, bringing their on-the-ground insights into broader conversations with corrections professionals nationwide.
From ADX to MSTC, leadership was demonstrated through direct engagement and active participation. These visits reinforced the Bureau’s ongoing commitment to transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement, as senior leaders connected with staff, listened to their perspectives, and modeled a leadership style rooted in presence, responsiveness, and accountability.
