(BOP) - Five staff from the United States Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC), successfully completed Introduction to Correctional Techniques Phase II training at the Staff Training Academy (STA), in Glynco, Georgia.

The BOC does not have a formal correctional training program; BOC corrections officers are trained by the police department. The agency is learning about the Bureau's methodologies in order to establish their own specific correctional training. During the three week training course, the BOC staff were required to meet the same pass/fail requirements as staff from Bureau of Prisons institutions in academics, firearms, and physical abilities, as well as self-defense familiarization.

United States Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections Director Rick Mullgrav attended the graduation ceremony and expressed his gratitude to the STA staff and the Bureau for making this training opportunity possible and successful for his staff. STA Director Felipe Rodriguez, Jr., stated "The Staff Training Academy staff were appreciative of the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise and share their vast correctional knowledge with staff from the BOC. The BOC staff were truly professionals and we were glad to have them experience the high quality training which the Bureau of Prisons is known for in the world of corrections."
