(BOP) - In June, Federal Prison Industries (FPI or UNICOR) announced that the upholstery factory located at the United States Penitentiary (USP) in Allenwood, PA would be temporarily shut down or "mothballed." However, as a result of hard work by staff and inmates at the institution, FPI succeeded in securing additional business that will allow the factory to continue operating.
The Allenwood upholstery factory is one of only three factories operated within the secure confines of a high security institution. Keeping the factory operational reduces FPI's proposed consolidation savings slightly; however, continuing sustainable and profitable UNICOR operations in a high security environment while providing additional capacity for new business, is a positive step forward for the corporation.
